The Department for Education introduced compulsory relationships and sex education (RSE) for secondary pupils from September 2020, in addition to compulsory health education. At Ormiston New Academy we deliver this through Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE).
As part of this, all schools are required to consult with parents when developing and reviewing their policies for PSHE, which will inform decisions on when and how certain content is covered. We aim to deliver statutory content that is age appropriate and is informed by local data to ensure that our students are educated about aspects of PSHE that enable them to make informed decisions and form their own views on important topics. For this reason, our PSHE curriculum is under constant review, the parental consultation remains open throughout the academic year.
Effective engagement gives the space and time for parents to input, ask questions, share concerns and for the academy to decide the way forward. We will listen to your views and then make reasonable decisions as to how we proceed. When and how content is taught is ultimately a decision for the academy, consultation does not provide a parental veto on curriculum content.
